Home › Staff › Role: Medical & Dental

If you’re a doctor, dentist, consultant or trainee working across our three hospitals, this page is for you.

Our EPR brings together patient information from across all three sites into one record. That means less time moving between different systems, and more time with your patients.

At go-live, the EPR replaces more than 90 of our current systems. Some specialist systems, in areas like radiology, laboratories, critical care, endoscopy and ophthalmology, will stay in place but connect into the EPR, so you get a fuller picture without losing what already works well in those areas.

For consultants and dentists, this means a clearer, longitudinal view of each patient’s journey. Decisions can be made with confidence that you’re seeing the full picture, and shared standards across our trusts should mean less duplication and fewer workarounds.

This page brings together the FAQs, news and stories most relevant to medical and dental staff, so you can find what matters to you in one place.

Nursing care in our EPR

This demonstration gives an overview of some key nursing functionality in the EPR.

Medical & Dental FAQs

  • Will the EPR system prompt a resus status before any procedures happen?

Resus status will be entered or verified at point of entry and will be visible in a prominent place when the patient is selected or on the patient care status boards. Respect forms remain on paper.

  • What is in the patient chart in the EPR?

The chart is the hub for all information about a patient, covering the current visit and previous ones. Imagine it as being the replacement for the ‘brown notes’, the patient notes you have and use on the ward currently. View the EPR demonstrations on this website for more information.

  • What is the acute status board in the EPR?

It's the main working screen for clinicians, described as the “doctor’s side” of MEDITECH. It holds the rounds list with key patient information at a glance: location, length of stay, special indicators, resuscitation status, current and visit problems, and the latest NEWS (early warning) scores. View the EPR demonstrations, such as an overview of the EPR system, on this website for more information.

  • Can I create my own templates in the EPR?

The pre-built clinical documentation is fixed and cannot be changed or edited. However, there will be relevant mechanisms for customising text tailored to specific clinician groups, and relevant groups will have targeted training to use that custom function.
Subject matter experts from all three trusts were fully involved in the design of these documents, so it is fully expected that they are fit for purpose.

  • Will the EPR replace existing referral processes and will all current referral types be available?

Yes, where those referral processes are already internal. Internal referrals are the only referral mechanism that is changing; they will move entirely to our MEDITECH EPR and come off ICE.
External referral processes will remain on the electronic referral service, so GPs and community reams referring in to our Group will do what they always did. Any referrals we make to an external provider will continue to be made in the mechanism they always have been. Take a look at 'The inpatient referral board in the EPR' demonstration on this website for more information.

  • Will the EPR change my day-to-day work?

Some roles may see changes where their work connects with clinical services, patient areas or information shared through existing processes. The EPR change team are working with staff to help them understand how the EPR will impact their work and prepare for any change.

  • What will happen to medication records when we move to the EPR?

When we move to the EPR, medication records will be brought into the new system so staff have accurate and up-to-date information about a patient’s medicines. Pharmacy and clinical teams will help plan and test this process before go-live to make sure the transition is safe and accurate.

  • Will patients notice a difference?

Yes. Patients should only need to tell their health story once and it will be recorded in the EPR, along with care and treatment information – available to all those with a legitimate need to see it. This saves them having to keep telling different staff about their health and symptoms.

  • What happens when a patient moves between wards, clinics or hospitals?

Their electronic record moves with them across wherever they are within all sites of our three acute hospitals. Their care team in each site will be able to see their latest information immediately.

  • How will handovers change?

Everyone involved in a patient’s care will be working from the same live patient record, making it easier to see the latest observations, assessments, care plans, medications, test results and outstanding actions.

  • Will it replace my clinical judgement?

No. NWEPR is a tool to support decision-making, not make decisions for you.

  • How will our EPR make care safer?

NWEPR brings together up-to-date clinical information in one place and includes safety features such as alerts for allergies, adverse drug reactions, deterioration and other patient risks, supporting decision making.
