Wondering what the EPR means for you, your team or your patients?

These are the questions staff are asking us most often. We will continue to add to these questions in the coming months. Use the search box or scroll down to see the most common questions and answers.  If your question isn’t answered here, then get in touch.

  • Why are the hospitals getting an EPR?

The hospitals are getting an EPR to give patients better care. Today, information about a patient's care can sit across different systems and paper notes, and staff spend time finding and piecing it together. The EPR brings it into one easily accessible place. Nationally, the NHS has set a target for all hospitals to have an EPR in place, and many have already done this. Our hospitals are now joining others to meet this target.

  • Can third parties access my data?

No. Your information is not shared with external organisations except where the law requires it or where you have given consent.

  • Will my data be used commercially?

No. Your information may be used in anonymised form for research or quality improvement, but it will not be sold to or shared with commercial organisations.

  • Who will be able to see my health information?

Only staff directly involved in your care at one of our hospitals, locations or clinics where they deliver patient care, with the appropriate level of access for their role. The EPR records who has accessed your information and when.

  • Will my health and care information be secure on the new system?

Yes. Your information will be stored digitally, in the UK, on secure systems. It is accessible only to staff who have a legitimate reason to see it, and all access is logged.

  • Where do I go with questions the website does not answer?

If you have a question about the EPR programme that is not covered on this site, you can speak to your EPR Champion or Superuser. You can also contact the EPR Team.

  • If I am worried about the change, what should I do?

Talk to your manager, your trust's EPR change lead, or your Change Network representative. There is no expectation that everyone will feel ready straight away. The programme is designed with that in mind - there will be support before, during and after go-live. Questions you do not have answers to yet are worth raising; the programme team wants to hear them. Speak to the change team at your hospital or contact the EPR Team via the contact form on this website.

  • What if I'm not confident using digital systems?

Everyone will receive role-specific training before go-live, opportunities to practise using the system and support on wards and departments during implementation.

  • Will patients notice a difference?

Yes. Patients should only need to tell their health story once and it will be recorded in the EPR, along with care and treatment information – available to all those with a legitimate need to see it. This saves them having to keep telling different staff about their health and symptoms.

  • What happens when a patient moves between wards, clinics or hospitals?

Their electronic record moves with them across wherever they are within all sites of our three acute hospitals. Their care team in each site will be able to see their latest information immediately.

  • How will handovers change?

Everyone involved in a patient’s care will be working from the same live patient record, making it easier to see the latest observations, assessments, care plans, medications, test results and outstanding actions.

  • Will it replace my clinical judgement?

No. NWEPR is a tool to support decision-making, not make decisions for you.
