Wondering what the EPR means for you, your team or your patients?

These are the questions staff are asking us most often. We will continue to add to these questions in the coming months. Use the search box or scroll down to see the most common questions and answers.  If your question isn’t answered here, then get in touch.

  • How will the build of our EPR keep up with national maternity reports?

The team reviews the build continually and is working on a future state that accommodates the maternity care bundle. Actions arising from reports such as Ockenden will be incorporated once known, and the Maternity Care Bundle. For example, perinatal mental health tools like the Edinburgh Depression Scale are being included.

  • In midwifery, how will home births and transfers-in work?

One form in the EPR works for both home and inpatient births – for example, choosing home birth asks for the first and second midwife and their arrival times.
A home birth ward board will give coordinators live oversight, and a transfer-in is a change of location plus the usual alerting of colleagues.

  • As a midwife, will I be reminded to reassess complex women more often?

Documents have preset timings that can be changed with a switch beside the assessment name.
Due and overdue items appear on the ward board so everyone has oversight, not just the individual midwife.

  • As a midwife, can I document as things happen?

Yes. The standard is contemporaneous documentation. You can save the form as a draft, add information as labour progresses, and complete it after the birth.
See the community midwifery demonstration on this site to see an overview of the EPR system for midwives. The demo includes overflow clinic management of unexpected service users, how appointments are colour-coded and customisable, the option to select your team and see each midwife’s diary and how users can adjust their view. Please search 'midwife' in the website search function to find the link.

  • What devices will midwives use, in the community and in delivery rooms?

Devices are still being discussed. For community midwives working out and about, and for delivery rooms and ward-based areas, the team is looking at how each option may work clinically before a decision is made.

  • Will I be able to see midwifery care at other trusts?

Yes. Across all three locations you can see visits, appointments, admission details and documentation, so a QEH midwife can see a woman’s notes from the Norfolk and Norwich.

  • Can I cover a midwifery colleague’s caseload?

Yes. You can sign up to a colleague’s patients to cover sickness or leave, document in the system, then hand back to their designated midwife.

  • Can community midwives block out time for admin and travel?

Yes. You can book admin time (such as checking blood results), travel time before and after home visits and team meetings that can be sent to colleagues’ diaries.

  • What will community midwifery clinic scheduling look like?

There is a community midwifery demonstration of the EPR system on this website giving an overview of the system for midwives. The demo includes overflow clinic management of unexpected service users, how appointments are colour-coded and customisable, the option to select your team and see each midwife’s diary and how users can adjust their view. Please put 'community midwife' into the search on this site to find the demo link.

  • Is there a chaplaincy role within the role based access control in the EPR

    Yes.

  • Who has the final say on a discharge letter in our EPR?

    The responsible clinician.

  • Will EOL Pink flower paperwork still be on paper with the EPR?

    Yes, at go live.
