This demo shows how the EPR will support community midwives in managing patient care, including travel or time blocking to protect capacity. The presentation explains how staff will manage and document patient care in our EPR, accessing different areas depending on their role.

A demo of the community midwifery inside the Norfolk and Waveney electronic patient record

This EPR Unlocked presentation gives a clear, 30-minute look at how our EPR will support community midwives across the Norfolk and Waveney University Hospitals Group.

Created by digital matron and midwife Lavinia Carless and EPR application analyst builder Alice Cawte, the demo covers clinic scheduling, including team and midwife rosters, colour-coded appointment types, overflow clinics and travel or time blocking to protect capacity.

It also shows how appointments can be booked using either “quick-book” or the full booking process, with demographics, special indicators such as interpreter needs and a clear audit trail showing who booked each slot.

The check-in and check-out process is designed to be simple and practical. It allows teams to confirm special indicators and chaperones, accept referrals, update the care team and view visit history, including scans and diabetes appointments. At checkout, staff can also schedule multiple future appointments in one go, helping to reduce administration and support continuity of care.

The build is being shaped with subject matter experts (SMEs) and community leads, if you have suggestions for community scheduling, home‑visit or continuity processes, please email Lavinia Carless at lavinia.carless@nnuh.nhs.uk.

Key points

  • One live record: across NNUH, JPUH and QEHKL community and hospital teams will see the same information.
  • Continuity and caseloading: colleagues can document care to cover a caseload during sickness/leave, then hand back to the designated midwife.
  • Built for your workflow: the system is being configured with community input, aligned to national maternity recommendations and designed to reduce manual admin.
  • Safe, role‑based access: student documentation requires countersignature; some documents (e.g. sonography) are restricted to specific professions; all access is auditable.
  • Off‑site working: the programme is reviewing suitable devices and data options to support home visits, and will configure maternity hub locations plus a “home visit” location in the EPR.
