This demo shows some of the main steps involved in registering a patient in our new EPR.
Watch: the registering a patient demo
The demo was presented during EPR Unlocked by Amy Finney, EPR PAS application lead manager. It walks through how the system will look and feel.
In our EPR, “registering” means arriving a patient for an appointment and confirming their demographics. This creates an account (an episode of care) that tests and documents can be attached to. An account can also be created earlier, at booking (pre-registration).
The demo shows a patient being arrived from the community-wide scheduling screen.
Staff work through tabs covering demographics, contacts, additional details, special indicators, visit details and referral pathways. Some fields can be edited, and those marked with an asterisk are mandatory. Details such as address, phone number and next of kin will still be checked.
Key points
- Registering: Means arriving a patient for an appointment and confirming their demographics.
- Booking out: Outcoming a clinic is called “booking out” in the EPR.
- Accounts: Each registration creates an account, which is an episode of care. Documents and tests attach to it, and every attendance gets a new account number.
- Medical record number: Stays the same for a patient across all three trusts.
- Patients due today: Appear on the community-wide scheduling screen. Select the patient, then use the Register button in the green bar on the right.
- Registration tabs: Cover demographics, contacts, additional details, special indicators (such as reasonable adjustments), visit details, and referrals and pathways.
- PDS trace: The system runs a trace so you can choose which demographics to pull through. It will not repeat the trace if one was done in the last seven days, or for current inpatients.
- Pre-registration: Booking an appointment puts the patient in a pre-registered state, so tests such as bloods or X-rays can be ordered before they arrive.
- Admissions from ED: An ED patient admitted to hospital can be “rolled over” to an inpatient account, keeping their medication and documents.
- Clinic outcomes: Outcomes, such as RTT codes and next steps, will flow digitally to the scheduling screen.
