Nick Ansell, EPR programme director, and Jon Harrowven, chief operations information officer, gave an online update on our new EPR during EPR Unlocked.
Watch: the EPR overview
They explain how MEDITECH Expanse will become the new electronic patient record (EPR) for Norfolk and Waveney University Hospitals Group, planned to go live in May 2027.
Nick and Jon cover progress so far, the benefits of bringing information from many separate systems into one shared patient record, and how the EPR will support more connected care across the three trusts.
The EPR is more than a new digital system. It changes some workflows, information flows and ways of working. The build is around 60–61% complete, with completion planned by the end of December 2026.
E-learning is planned for February 2027, followed by classroom training around three weeks later. Staff are encouraged to get involved with their local change team, attend demos and take part in testing, training or the EPR champion and super user networks.
Key points
- One shared record: The EPR provides one patient record across the three trusts, reducing repeated information gathering and data entry.
- Go-live: The programme is working towards a unified go-live in May 2027.
- Testing: Before go-live, staff will check that workflows work as expected through user acceptance testing.
- Training: E-learning is planned for February 2027, followed by classroom training.
- Champions and super users: EPR champions drawn from staff will support testing and training, and super users will support colleagues during and after go-live.
- After go-live: The EPR will continue to develop and improve.
