The Electronic Patient Record (EPR) is a digital system that holds clinical information about patients and makes it available to the staff involved in their care.
For Norfolk and Waveney’s acute hospitals, this is a shared system – one EPR across all three sites: Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals, James Paget University Hospitals and Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
Today, much of that information lives in paper notes or in separate systems that do not always connect to each other. Staff do a good job of building a picture from the different sources but it could be simpler. Information recorded at one site may not be visible at another.
The EPR changes that. It holds information digitally, updates in real time, and is accessible to any member of staff with the right access – wherever they are working.
The system being used across all three hospitals is MEDITECH Expanse. Our current plan is for the EPR to be switched on over the weekend of 22 – 23 May 2027. This date will remain under review.
Many current systems will be replaced at go-live. Some specialist systems will stay alongside the EPR, with information flowing between them. The systems section of this site sets out which are being replaced.
The EPR is one part of a wider picture. It works alongside the Norfolk and Waveney Shared Care Record – a read-only view available to a broader range of health and care professionals, including GPs, community nurses and social care teams. The EPR is the system your hospital teams and those working in our Group’s local clinics across Norfolk will work in. The Shared Care Record is how what they record becomes visible across the wider system.
