Karl’s patient Charlie has just been put on a waiting list for a non-life threatening operation. Charlie is expecting to wait around six months for an operation date, possibly longer.

But Karl – and Charlie – are worried he may lose his place when the EPR system launches and replaces the current waiting list.

How will the list be transferred and how can Karl and Charlie be reassured that no-one will slip through the cracks and disappear into a digital no-man’s land?

This is where the EPR’s data and analytics (D&A) team steps in, with part of its role to ensure all patient lists will be safely and seamlessly transferred from current systems to the new EPR when it launches.

Places will be secure and the move to the EPR will not cause patients to gain or lose places in the waiting list. What’s more, Karl will be able to see exactly where Charlie is on that list, and keep Charlie fully informed.

The migration team within the D&A team are creating the pathways to move all data, including appointments, to the new EPR system, said Matthew Traherne, one of the EPR lead developers.

“We need to be able to provide business as usual,” he said, pointing out that making sure patients are safe is the priority.

They work very closely with the team creating the EPR system for Norfolk and Waveney’s three acute hospitals, the Design Build Test team.

It’s a complex task, but essential to ensure patients like Charlie, and his consultant Karl, can be assured Charlie’s data is safe and his operation won’t be delayed due to the move to the EPR.
